Rev. Don Martin, a retired military chaplain, began gathering a group of people for worship in about 1978, meeting at the Pythian Hall in downtown Comox. The Comox Baptist Church was formally established on Feb 10 1980 with seven members.
Land at Anderton Rd and Daye Rd was purchased and cleared, and a wood-frame building was put up and dedicated on Nov. 25, 1984. The present structure was intended to be an education annex, with a planned sanctuary to face onto Anderton Rd. The second stage was never built. (Remarkably, the mortgage was burned on May 12 1991.)
In 1989 Rev. Martin retired (again), and Rev. Murray Pura was called. A vibrant spiritual life grew in the congregation, now renamed Comox Community Baptist Church, with a strong Sunday School and Bible study group presence. Rev. Pura left in 1994 to minister in Camrose, AB.
Rev. George Sears was called, leading the church from 1995 to June, 1999, when he left to pastor Berea Baptist Church in Surrey, BC.
Drew Westergaard, who had been part of the congregation, was called to give part-time pastoral leadership in 1999, later becoming the full-time pastor. During his ministry, the congregation grew in size, a thriving children’s ministry was held, an AWANA group run, and attendance was near 100. Pastor Drew left in 2005.
Rev. Norm Sowden, from Duncan BC, provided interim pastoral services from March to December, 2006.
Rev. Peter Hudson provided interim pastoral ministry following Rev. Sowden.
Rev. William (Bill) Hall was called from Grande Prairie, Alberta to be the pastor, starting his ministry late in 2007. In 2012, he announced his plans to retire in June of that year. Again, Rev. Hudson provided interim pastoral ministry following Rev. Hall’s retirement.
Rev. Clark Gietz was called as pastor, beginning his ministry in 2013. A sanctuary renovation was completed in 2015, and Alpha outreach programs run for several years. The church celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2020, but sadly, live worship services had to be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rev. Gietz announced his resignation in August 2020.
(Rev. Martin has passed away; Rev. Pura is a historical novelist; Rev. Sears is retired in Surrey, BC; Rev. Westergaard is pastoring a FEB congregation in Kimberley, BC; Rev. Sowden is pastoring a CBWC church in Mill Bay, BC; Rev. Hudson is retired; and Rev. Hall is retired, and still an active member of CCBC.)
